Biomechanics Every Golf Instructor Should Know – Part 1

This is part one in a series that I will be producing on the basics of biomechanics specifically applicable to golf. It is biomechanics that every golf instructor should know.

My personal background is included as an introduction and then, definitions of biomechanics, kinematics and kinetics are presented. It progresses to measurement systems and how 3D motion is measured, then sway, thrust and lift are defined with examples, and wrist angle graphs show typical types of release. Next speed, velocity and acceleration are discussed and the difference between linear and angular motion is explained. Finally a good introduction to the kinematic sequence in both transition and downswing is given. Some example average values for male and female tour pros from key points in the kinematic sequence are shown.
